When it comes down to it Arira will offer the most for a free AV. Its defection rate is the highest of any free AV, and will even out perform many of the leading paid AV programs. It offers anti rootkit protect, fast scan speed, real-time/ active residential shield, But no active email-scanner. The pop ad might bug some people to buy the full version. The updates are sometimes a slow or may not work at all. Depending how many people are using it. Avast one is another powerful free AV. It has a higher detection rate than AVG, but not as high as Avira. It offer P2P scanning, rootkits scanning, internet messaging protection, outlook/ exchange shield. Avast also updates couple times a day But high rate of false positives. AVG is nice and simple program. It offers a real-time active residential shield. It offers AntiSpyware scanner and an e-mail scanner. But the scans are very slow and it does not offer any rootkit protection. Heavy update installer at times. Now instead of saying go with AVG, Avast, or Avira. I just give you quick demonstration in what these programs will do. Now its your choice where you go from here. |

Among the free ones, I would say AVG, Avira and Avast in that order. However, they don't give you full protection. Why? AVG does not offer, if not poor protection, against keyloggers, p2p / file sharing threats, dialers, backdoors, malicious activeX controls and spamware and no p2p / file sharing protection. It doesn't have a link scanner. Avira does not offer, if not poor protection, against keyloggers, hackers, identity theft, vulnerabilities, malicious tracking cookies and spamware.and no p2p / file sharing protection. It doesn't have a link scanner. Avast does not offer, if not poor protection, against browser exploits, OS exploits, keyloggers, backdoors, hackers, phishing, identity theft, malicious activeX controls, vulnerabilities, malicious tracking cookies and spamware. It doesn't have a link scanner. Take note that these features are lacking in their paid versions. So expect the free versions to have lesser features. |

Its all a matter of opinion. I use Avast , I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/ V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/ V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps |
