she's been abit stupid and was downloading torrent, but it sounds like the virus she has is deleting registry items, whenever she trys to open programs etc it asks her for a program to open them in... sounds like the root files are gone or are no longer connected...ive guided her though the basic things which i would try like system restore but that wont open either, i also tried to get her to run system restore in safe mode and via the command prompt but still no luck, shes also clicked the " last known good config" option on startup but still no better.im about stumped now as im no expert in the matter, shes running windows XP, im guessing she will need a clean install to fix it?

Apparently while downloading something, the file was actually a virus, A pop up alert message came up saying file is infected with trojan or something similar, after clicking ok the computer turned off.I was able to restart my computer now the same alert message came out but this time I didn't click ok in case it'll turn off on me again...I'm currently trying to find softwares to help me with this...I have the windows re installation CD but right now I can't reprogram my computer since I have many things I need and can't save them....Please help I'm running windows XP Home edition in case that matters.

I have windows 7 on my laptop. I used the online eset scanner it says that there is a win32 trojan there but I am assuming it can't clean it. Of course if I try to install anti virus software it just stops midway and doesn't complete. So I can't just install software, I was surprised that the eset scanner worked. I am at work and we don't have wireless here so I don't have internet access until later. Please tell me how to remove this virus and if possible how to remove it without using the internet. I am not a computer wiz but I do know some things so please explain in detail. Thanks in advance
