What do I need to start up a healthy aquarium?
I would very much like to start an aquarium. I haven't 1 since I was a kid, when you basically had the choice of what size tank and what brand filter. I went to take a look at some at a petstore the other day, thye had alot of those cool starter tanks, that come with the lid & gravel & some folage & filter & all, but it seems that there are all sorts of diffferent filter options & lights & things & I have no idea what is actually needed for a healthy tank or what is just overpriced & unneeded. There seem to be several different opinons online & i'm lost. I haven't decided on an exact size yet, I now I want one that is bigger than a standard 10 gallon, but those huge 55 gallon tanks are just to big for my home, something in the middle. I have cats so I want the tank & the lid to be sturdy & hard to move.I was looking into guppies or those fish that are floresecent according to the petstore do well under a blacklight. Both seemed to be pretty, easy to take care of fish, some algea eaters ofcourse. Everybody says goldfish are easiest but I have no desire for any kind of goldfish as we had those as a child & they just seem to keel over if you look at them funny.
Help with aquarium/vivarium/paludarium?
First with a little background info. Currently I have 2 aquariums in my bedroom. Both freshwater a 5g and a 10g. I want another, a big one more than 50g. I thought about making it a brackish aquarium and filling it half with water and half with land with mudskippers and figure 8 puffer fish. 1. Is it a paludarium or vivarium?2. Is it safe to keep a vivarium paludarium with brackish water in a bedroom?3. Does bacteria form on the rocks and sand of a paludarium vivarium? 4. Is it ok to feed the mudskippers only frozen food instead of live food?Thanks
Does anyone have cleaning tips for my eclipse 12 aquarium?
I was placed in a rehabilitation center for 2 months. While I was gone my wife did nothing except feed the fish. Upon my return it looks as if someone spray painted the front glass green. I have tried scrubbing with a sponge, but that doesn't touch it. Is there anything I can do to clean this without scratching it. I can't believe the algae is that tough to remove, any advice?
Can I put salt In my fresh water aquarium to help my fish?

After being unable to fix my old aquarium's severe algae problem, I decided to go out and buy this kit. petsmart.com product index.jsp?productId 3804459I put everything needed for an aquarium into the tank. After waiting 24 hours and when the temperatures were equal, I transferred the fish over to the new tank Saturday morning. Unfortunately, after a few hours I lost three of my little white tetras, but the rest seemed to assimilate well. Then this afternoon, everything began to change.First of all, I noticed the Nitrogen cycle was starting. My aquarium water was a shade of white. I know this is normal for a new aquarium.Then I noticed something. My Pleco on the bottom has white spots on him, which seems like Ich to me, and Pop Eye. Then, I also noticed that my Cory Cat has Pop Eye. There are also white things that look like little shreds of paper on the bottom of the tank, something I noticed was not there earlier.I would like to know if the aquarium change caused these. Also, what can I do to treat both of these diseases and save my fish? I would like something that I can easily put into the tank that will treat the two fish while not affecting the others, and something I can get from a local pet store.Thanks
