The filter for my turtles' aquarium is plugged in but the motor is not even running. do i need a new one?

Question: The filter for my turtles' aquarium is plugged in but the motor is not even running. do i need a new one?

They're not even my turtles, but the person they belong to won't be around for a while. I don't want to buy a filter if I don't need to. But it looks like I do. Could something else be wrong?

Um well u could go out and buy a new filter then have them pay you back when they return or u could do some ressearch on this type of filter.or u could if u do bring a filter from your house and use it in their tank temporarily just figure out wats wrong quick because turtles are very messy animals!!!!

Is it a fully submersible filter? If you open up the filter there is an impeller (looks like a propeller) with a magnet attached to it. If there is a lot of crud on the magnet or something stuck on the impeller it won't turn. Try cleaning that out. The filter should be making a slight humming sound and vibrating a little. If it's not doing anything at all then it will need to be replaced.
