New aquarium- fish compatibility questions?

Question: New aquarium- fish compatibility questions?

(Posted by: hk45c on 2010-02-08 11:52:14)

Hi, I'm starting a new aquarium with some angelfish and am trying to figure out what fish would be compatible with the angelfish. I've been interested in adding some tiger barbs, zebrafish (danios) and a cory cat or two. I know the angelfish can be aggressive, especially with feeding, and I've heard that the danios like to chase and that the barbs can be fin nippers. I've also heard that the issues with the danios and the barbs can be reduced if the fish are kept in schools of at least six. The angelfish are what I'm centering the aquarium around; the other fish are just some breeds that I had considered. Am I going to run into issues keeping these guys together? What are some good tank mates for angelfish? Thanks!

Please include your aquarium size, as well as how many Angels you'll be keeping. It is impossible to recommend additional stock without knowing the above.

What size tank is this? That highly depends on what you can and can't add. First, barbs are semi-aggressive fish. It is not suggested to keep them with anything that may have flowing fins that could get nipped at torn (like your angels, which are also aggressive). Even if you kept these guys in the right sized group, they are STILL semi-aggressive. So they could STILL cause problems in your tank. However, you are very right. If a schooling fish isn't kept in a proper sized group it can cause them to stress, and bring out unwanted behavior.. Such as fin nipping. The zebra danios would be fine in your tank, IF you have the proper number of them together. They like groups of 5-6+ , so keeping any number under that would not be advisable. Some other fish that would do well with angels: -A group of pygmy or dwarf corycats. They are schooling fish and you would need 5-6+ . -Tetra. But beware, tetra are notorious fin nippers when stressed. -rasbora. These guys are very peacful schooling fish. Unlike tetra, they are much less likely to become fin nippers. This is only a little info.. Continue to do some of your own online research. Research is a wonderful way to avoid problems arising in your tank! ALSO! When considering fish, do not forget your tank size! The LAST thing you want to do is overstock! Overstocking causes your tank and its inhabitants to be unhealthy and unhappy! And, keep in mind, the "inch per gallon " rule is crap. If you follow it, you WILL overstock.

Well what size is your aqurium? i htink just doing the angelfish and cory cats will be good. cory cats will saty out of the way and since their food sinks to the bottom there no problems with the angelfish dring feeding time. if u want other fish i would suggest mollies. they get to be a good size and are a great community fish . i have two in with my gourami and he is aggressive but their size he cant push around to much. he used to kill all my smaller fish like guppies and danios. so i got the mollies and they get to be about the same size so he cant push them around as much. i hope this helps!
