It looks like vector art done in Adobe Illustrator. It used on t-shirts, web design, graphic design elements, packaging, logos etc. Theres no one sure way that its used. Check this site out: abduzeedo.com/ Search around and click on images you like (in the posts) usually it will link up to the artists website that did the picture. You can find out what they do for a living from there.

The first looks like done in a mid century modernism style. Flickr has a great group of fellow like minded enthusiasts posting their favorite images, often in this style. Mary Blair, Alain Grée, Abner Graboff and other illustrators of that time did simple colorful shapes like this. Generally, they painted with gouache, which is opaque watercolor. The second illustration is by Bob Staake, or someone imitating him awfully closely. Bob has a great website, and he works in a vector based style, probably Adobe Illustrator. Illustration is a dying field for work, and the pros I know are suffering right now. Publishing market is shrinking, and prices for illustrations has come down. Best to think of illustration as part time work, or a sideline. You could always put up an Etsy shop and start selling small items, stationary, prints, etc. You could illustrate a children's book, put up tee shirts on threadless, or put together a portfolio of work. The good thing is you don't need a degree to get started!
