Look up some old works of art and use them as examples for what they tell you. Art is a mode of express... like music, or your fashion, writing, etc. etc. You can tell a lot about a culture through their art. Ex: The painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps... was it? you could talk about how he was unrealistically depicted in the painting in a rather glorious manner... in part because he commissioned it or because people were afraid of insulting him. Just look at some works and interpret them. If your teacher is anything like my art history teachers they will love LOVE love LOVE love IT!!!! if you go through some works and interpret them yourself and say what they mean to you. After all you could probably talk about what your fav bands music means to you... could you not?

Art not only teaches humanity about itself, but that it is unique to each individual. We each read ourselves--our owns souls and minds--into art. Proust says that the readers of his book were not his readers, but readers of their own minds; that they were not reading into his soul as we often believe we are reading into the artist's soul, but rather we are using the art as a tool to read into our own souls. Art is epic and individual; material and immaterial; physical and emotional; historical and timeless. It reaches into multiple realms--the world and our minds--simultaneously. It also stretches across time and has the ability to change and develop culture. See how Romeo & Juliet, Beethoven's 5th, the Mona Lisa, are all a part of who we are as a people today. Most importantly it is an essential human element. We are creators, thinkers, and admirers. It is so much more than this too...but I'm afraid my answer is too long already... I hope this helps. Good luck!
