If your camera is more modern then it is likely there is a wireless remote that will work with your cameras, then there are camera that use an electronic cable release and then there are the older more manual cameras that use a cable release. Mark

That would be a wired/ wireless remote, for digital its simple a button on a cord or the same but wireless, some also allow you to focus. for film it is a physical cable which engages the shutter.

A "self-timer " is a windup device used to activate a shutter. It screws into the "shutter release ". It also can be located next to the shutter, depending on the age of the camera. You set it for whatever 10 or 15 seconds. You may also purchase a long cable release that you can screw into the shutter release. Since you omitted your camera type and model. It could also be an electronic device made just for your camera by the manufacturer.
