Reliable video camera information

Question on how to get a video file from my video camera to open?
I have a Sony HDR UX1 which I used to record our band's halftime show. The director asked me to put the video on a flash drive so that the band can watch their performance in school on Monday. I was able to download the video with Picture Motion Browser and it saved as an MPEG2 file and then there was also another kind of file that was downloaded with it that ends with .modd. When I went to open the file from Quicktime, Window's Media, or RealPlayer, they each had some kind of error and could not open the video at all. The flash drive I was given had previous videos on it, which were in a compressed folder and the icon said it was an AVI file that opens with QuickTime. Those videos opened up just fine when I clicked on them.So my question is, do I need to convert the MPEG2 files to AVI? Or is there some way I can fix the files so that when someone uses the flash drive that the video will open?Thank You

My friends and i always make movies and we use someone's camera but its so hard because half the time we cant use any of the cameras I really want to get a video camera camcorder. When we do our videos, we have to set it down places. We always are setting it on books and couches, but it always takes forever to get it to stay. I also want to get some sort of stand.
